Reduced Solar Activity Favors Twin Maternities
In: Twin research and human genetics: the official journal of the International Society for Twin Studies (ISTS) and the Human Genetics Society of Australasia, Band 15, Heft 1, S. 133-137
ISSN: 1839-2628
Mechanisms underlying effects of physical factors on twin births are unclear. The present work studied an association between monthly and yearly multiple birth rates (MBRs) in the Novosibirsk region, south-west Siberia, in relation to solar activity (sunspot numbers) and geomagnetic activity (Ap index) from 1957 to 2008. The difference was verified by comparing the yearly MBR observed in 3-year peaks (M = 7.36, SD = 0.33 per 1,000 births) and 3-year troughs (M = 8.10, SD = 0.31 per 1,000 births, p < .001) of an 11-year solar cycle. An inverse correlation (r = –.60, p < .001) was found between sunspot numbers and MBR for a lag of 1 year. Cross-spectral analysis of a 52-year time series established a common signal with the period of 10.5 years, as well as high coherence (K(2) = 0.87). The multiple regression analysis revealed a significant interaction of solar and geomagnetic effects upon the frequency of twin maternities. The results show that elevated solar activity within the 11-year cycle coinciding with the time of conception inhibits multiple births in a manner depending on geomagnetic activity. It is hypothesized that the likely mechanism underlying the association is early fetal loss induced by solar radiation/flux and its terrestrial mediators.

The Asia-Pacific in the era of reduced Soviet military presence
In: Issues & studies: a social science quarterly on China, Taiwan, and East Asian affairs, Band 26, Heft 9, S. 58-83
ISSN: 1013-2511
Since the Second World War, both the USA and the USSR have had military forces and weaponry deployed in the Asia-Pacific region. While in the past, the scaling down of one superpower's military presence often led to the other filling in the vacuum, since the late 1980s, a new feature has been introduced in that both superpowers, without formal military agreement have undertaken military withdrawals from this region. In view of this novel development, the paper aims at analysing the causes and consequences of reduced Soviet military presence in the Asia-Pacific region. In the main, it is the paper's intent to invoke caution against euphoric a reading of Soviet military reductions. (DÜI-Sen)

Toxic comments are associated with reduced activity of volunteer editors on Wikipedia
In: PNAS nexus, Band 2, Heft 12
ISSN: 2752-6542
Abstract
Wikipedia is one of the most successful collaborative projects in history. It is the largest encyclopedia ever created, with millions of users worldwide relying on it as the first source of information as well as for fact-checking and in-depth research. As Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of its volunteer editors, its success might be particularly affected by toxic speech. In this paper, we analyze all 57 million comments made on user talk pages of 8.5 million editors across the six most active language editions of Wikipedia to study the potential impact of toxicity on editors' behavior. We find that toxic comments are consistently associated with reduced activity of editors, equivalent to 0.5–2 active days per user in the short term. This translates to multiple human-years of lost productivity, considering the number of active contributors to Wikipedia. The effects of toxic comments are potentially even greater in the long term, as they are associated with a significantly increased risk of editors leaving the project altogether. Using an agent-based model, we demonstrate that toxicity attacks on Wikipedia have the potential to impede the progress of the entire project. Our results underscore the importance of mitigating toxic speech on collaborative platforms such as Wikipedia to ensure their continued success.
Can financial innovation help to explain the reduced volatility of econonomic activity?

"The stabilization of economic activity in the mid 1980s has received considerable attention. Research has focused primarily on the role played by milder economic shocks, improved inventory management, and better monetary policy. This paper explores another potential explanation: financial innovation. Examples of such innovation include developments in lending practices and loan markets that have enhanced the ability of households and firms to borrow and changes in government policy such as the demise of Regulation Q. We employ a variety of simple empirical techniques to identify links between the observed moderation in economic activity and the influence of financial innovation on consumer spending, housing investment, and business fixed investment. Our results suggest that financial innovation should be added to the list of likely contributors to the mid-1980s stabilization." ; Includes bibliographical references. ; "The stabilization of economic activity in the mid 1980s has received considerable attention.
